A Meaning-filled Marriage

Perspective is powerful.

People have been asking if that glass if half-full or half-empty for many many years and they'll be asking each other after we're all gone.

How about in your marriage?

Two married people could be going along in the same relationship, experiencing the same highs and lows and yet have very different takes on how well they are doing.

What is the difference between being in a groove and being in a rut?

When a marriage lacks meaning, how the marriage is going may likely rely on the judgment of superficial and surface-level interactions, as well as fleeting emotions. This is detrimental to the relationship as the base of a good marriage is putting the other person first. Without meaning, the tendency to put one's self ahead of one's partner or the marriage as a whole will increase.

So what are we talking about when we say, "meaning in marriage?"

It could be a number of things, and we break down three layers of meaning in marriage in this post.

When we say meaning we are not saying, why does the marriage exist or what is your sole purpose together in this universe. Rather, the idea of meaning in marriage is connected to the marriage's significance and the value it brings to its parts. It helps us look deep inside a relationship as well as how that relationship fits in the bigger world.

When a couple is struggling with aspect of love and companionship that give marriage intrinsic meaning, it can be helpful for them to lift their eyes up beyond the rut (or groove) and add meaning to their marriage in a new and refreshing way.

But how?

Add meaning to your marriage by finding some ways that your unique union can make a difference in the world around you.

  1. Make a list of your strengths and a list of your partner's strengths.

  2. Identify places your strengths are common and places that are complementary (seemingly opposite)

  3. What are the needs you see in the world? Of your community?

  4. What are you, as a couple, passionate about?

  5. How / Where do those things intersect?

Not ground breaking and perhaps some of you have used this kind of tool on an individual level. What happens when we apply it to our marriages?

Give it a shot, we believe you'll be pleasantly surprised.
